Several streets in Hialeah have been blocked off for several hours Thursday morning while Hialeah Police try to arrest a man they say is refusing to surrender.

The suspect, 40-year-old

William Gomez is wanted on outstanding warrants, one for DUI and another for assault. Police say he has a violent past.

According to investigators, around 2 a.m., Gomez was spotted in the area of 580 East 55th Street. They say he bailed out of his car, them ran into his backyard.  For hours, Gomez hid in the canal behind his home to avoid police.

Early Thursday morning, officers blocked of the area surrounding the home. 

Police are waiting for members from the Miami Dade County Sheriff's Department to make the arrest.
